2014 R.A. Horn Honorary Life Membership – Mrs. Jacqueline “Lynn” Brumfield

Introduction from Melissa Bestgen

The purpose of the award is to honor a retiring member or non-member who has performed an outstanding service to school psychology and has an abidinginterest in the profession. The nominee should be an individual who has contributed significantly to the field of schoolpsychology. Nominees can be OSPA members or non-members and can be nominated by anyone.

This year’s recipient is Mrs. Jacqueline “Lynn” Brumfield.

Lynn Brumfeld graduated from the University in Dayton with her education specialist in school psychology degree in 1984, but had been working with students in need long before. As a special education teacher since 1971, Lynn was inspired  by her students to learn more about special needs. After her training at University of Dayton, Lynn immersed herself in her districts and professional organizations, devoting her energy to work in behavior modification, school psychology student training, and philanthropy. Lynn has been a member of SWOSPA, OSPA, and NASP since 1984, serving on the executive boards of SWOSPA and OSPA for years as treasurer or secretary. She has also served on the board of and volunteered for the Special Olympics since 1977, acting a president, vice president, secretary, treasurer, and coach. She is also involved in many community charitable organizations. Lynn finally retired, but has left a legacy in southwestern Ohio of devotion to the field and to the needs of all students. For her efforts in school psychology and continued service to the field, the Ohio School Psychologists Association Executive Board is honored to present Lynn Brumfeld with an R.A. Horn Honorary Life Membership.

Remarks from Lynn Brumfield

To use the words of Chief Dan George  who played Old Lodge Skins in the movie “Little Big Man”......”My heart soars like an eagle!”

I am both humbled and honored to join the legacy of so many other school psychologists who have led the way in Ohio. I would like to sincerely thank OSPA for this recognition and my colleagues from SWOSPA who put the nomination together on my behalf.

It has been by privilege to work within the OSPA organization and with our SWOSPA regional over the years. We have an excellent association that not only promotes our profession but has been a leader in the development of educational thinking - particularly for those we serve who do not always have a strong voice. I have been active in special education since before landmark legislation such as 94-142 was enacted and have witnessed many of the changes in education that have given students with unique challenges opportunities to learn, compete and become active and functional members of the community. As we move forward I can only imagine that the future of education will look like....but many of you will be in the forefront of what lies ahead.
