A Related Services Guide to Educational Identification of Autism

The intent of this technical assistance paper is to provide non-regulatory guidance for early childhood and school-based professionals in conducting comprehensive Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) evaluations and eligibility determination within the state of Ohio. The absence of clear regulations and guidance across Ohio’s local and state agencies has resulted in variable practices and inconsistent educational identification of ASD.

This guidance promotes clear and consistent practices through the use of evidence-based approaches for comprehensive educational evaluations emphasizing the use of research to inform the selection of assessment tools and processes for the benefit of all learners. This guidance is intended for Ohio’s educational professionals responsible for the identification of ASD including but not limited to: school psychologists, speech and language pathologists, occupational therapists, special education teachers, and other related service providers.

This technical assistance paper was produced by the Ohio School Psychologists Association (OSPA) Autism Task Force (ATF) with lead authors:

  • Lisa M. Saylor, M.S.Ed.
  • Amy L. Wade, M.S. CCC-SLP
  • Andrea Jarosz, Ed.S., NCSP
  • Lynn DeMange, OTR/L, CAS

And contributing authors:

  • Kaitlyn Lang, Ed.S., NCSP
  • Ashley Schwenn, Ed.S., ABSNP
