The Intervention Assistance Team (IAT) is a critical component of the school’s multi-tiered systems of support (MTSS), designed to help identify and address the academic and behavioral needs of students who are struggling. The IAT typically involves collaboration among classroom teachers, special education staff, school psychologists, and sometimes administrators. The goal of IAT is to identify students who are struggling early and implement targeted, evidence-based interventions to ensure their success. When the IAT process is working efficiently, it can prevent unnecessary referrals for special education evaluation and lead to student success. As part of an effort to strengthen the IAT process, the school psychologist plays an important role in supporting both the team and teachers.
