School Psychologists’ & Leaders’ Perceptions of Virtual School Psychology Services

The shortage of school psychologists is increasingly pervasive across the United States. The National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) recommends a ratio of one school psychologist to 500 students (1:500) to ensure adequate support, yet current data indicate the vast majority of states fail to meet this standard (Morrison et al., 2020). According to NASP’s February 2025 State Shortage Data Dashboard, only Maine, Connecticut, and Puerto Rico were meeting that ratio, with 31 states experiencing ratios worse than 1:1,000 (NASP, 2025). Furthermore, the ratio change worsened for 13 states between 2022-2023 and 2024-2025.
