It has been a busy summer for NASP that has included advocacy on issues that include:
Shortages and Mental Health. NASP’s efforts have targeted provision in the new law for an additional $1 billion to address the shortages of school psychologists and other school mental health professionals and increase schools’ capacity to provide comprehensive mental and behavioral health services. This is in addition to $1 billion to address these issues included in the FY23 federal budget signed into law this summer. Resources to support you with getting involved will be coming to the NASP website. These resources help with advocating funds are spent on evidence-based practices.
Gun Safety. NASP played an integral role in the newly passed Bipartisan Safer Communities Act. It was noted that this process benefited from the power of long-term relationship building, collaboration, and, ultimately, compromise in making progress. As the recent tragic shootings remind us, this bill does not accomplish all we need to ensure our schools and communities are free from gun violence. However, it is a significant step in the right direction, and NASP will continue to advocate for needed policies.
Policing in Schools. As a part of NASP’s leadership on positive school climate and safety, the Leadership Assembly adopted the Resolution on Policing in Schools.
Social Justice. As part of NASP’s strategic goal to advance social justice, the Board of Directors recently adopted a wide range of recommendations from the Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Taskforce. These recommendations encompass issues in policy, practice, professional development, leadership development, graduate education, and research within the profession and the Association itself. More detailed information is forthcoming.
The NASP Leadership Assembly has adopted three new position papers. These include Grade Retention and Promotion; Safe and Supportive Schools for Transgender and Gender Diverse Students; and Identification of Specific Learning Disabilities. Position papers represent official policy of the association.
As many school psychologists prepare for the start of another school year, NASP has highlighted a few recent articles that may assist with supporting students, families, and staff.
