| "Celebrities"
or Special Stories: |
Our membership is comprised
of school psychologists who have gone beyond the "role
of the school psychologist" in their respective school
districts. In addition to chairing district committees,
supervising interns and practicum students, and providing
professional development to staff, many have also held elected
offices and/or chaired committees in our professional associations;
presented at international, national, state and regional
conventions and conferences; and served as university faculty
members and/or supervisors for district school psychology
departments. The following CASP members are especially celebrated

| Recognizing
School Psychs: |
As we go about our professional careers and the daily requirements
that entails, it is easy for those of us in the field of School
Psychology to forget some of the outstanding day-to-day contributions
that School Psychologists make to both children and their
families, and our profession alike. As a way of recognizing
some of these outstanding day-to-day accomplishments, CASP
will periodically acknowledge the accomplishments of members
both on this website, and in CASPLINE. Suggestion for who
to recognize will be taken at future CASP meetings. |

Lauren Janus
Avon Lake City Schools
A recent graduate from John Carroll University’s
school psychology graduate program, Lauren Janus is in her
third year of practicing at Avon Lake City Schools. In the
fall of 2006, Lauren was hired to initiate the challenging
but rewarding Response to Intervention process in the district’s
four elementary (K-4) buildings. In the last 2 years, the
elementary buildings have made great strides embracing the
educational philosophy promoted through the RTI process
and Lauren has been a strong leader facilitating this process.
The amount of growth the district has made since RTI was
introduced is commendable.
Lauren has provided professional development to administrators
and teachers regarding the RTI process, the “Big 5”
reading components, the importance of universal screeners
and progress monitoring, and using data to drive instruction.
Lauren assists the building teams with analyzing the data
and making data-based decisions to provide appropriate instruction
and interventions for students.
In order to further drive the RTI process within the district,
Lauren developed and is a lead facilitator of the District
RTI Committee. Lauren’s data analysis and consultation
skills helped to pinpoint a systemic weakness in the district’s
core curriculum. This led to the district adopting and implementing
a supplemental phonics program (Fundations) in the classroom
and as part of the reading intervention program. The current
DIBELS data indicates students have stronger phonemic awareness,
basic decoding skills, and oral reading fluency since Fundations
has been implemented district-wide. Far fewer students require
Tier II/reading intervention support and the number of students
placed on IEPs for reading disabilities has been significantly
reduced.
In addition to her work with RtI, Lauren has taken an active
role in providing direct intervention services to students.
To address the social and emotional needs of the students
she serves, she co-facilitates counseling groups to address
bullying. Lauren also formed and conducts a Cheerleading
Club during recess to promote social skill development for
girls in her school. Academically, Lauren co-facilitated
Reader’s Theatre groups to improve reading fluency
with
students. Lauren has a passion for providing prevention
and intervention to students in both academics and emotional
areas. This diversity was highlighted as she participated
on the 2007 practitioner panel at the Fall Intern Conference
in Columbus.
Additionally, Lauren enjoys coaching football cheerleading
at the middle school level. When not working, Lauren likes
running, weight lifting, baking, making greeting cards and
scrapbooks, and spending time with friends and
family. Each summer vacation Lauren enjoys traveling overseas
to various countries.
